Our mission at The Boys and Girls Club of Central Appalachia is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. This mission is put to work four and five days a week in six of Buchanan County’s schools by a core of career professionals who are trained and certified educators. We also partner with local groups such as The Buchanan County Public Library, Kiwanis, Virginia Tech and Grundy Police and Fire Departments to provide programming to help our youth improve their lives, build self-esteem, and develop values and skills during their critical period of growth.
The Boys and Girls Club of Central Appalachia (BGCCA) provides, at no cost to the parents, an after-school enrichment program, academic assistance, a meal and transportation for the boys and girls of Buchanan County daily. We also assist teachers and principals with the crucial Standards of Learning (S.O.L.) testing by supplying academic mentoring using individual assistance, small group, and drop-in activities. The S.O.L. scores are important for all Buchanan County Schools to maintain accreditation and supply the youth of Buchanan County the best possible education. We have also introduced S.T.E.M. programming, LEGO education solutions, robotics and computer coding and programming into our schools for the first time.
Today, more than 3,500 young people are at risk in Buchanan County, Virginia, and need to take advantage of the programs, activities and services provided by the Boys & Girls Club of Central Appalachia. Our vision is to provide a world-class club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle.
Since 2007 the Boys & Girls Club of Central Appalachia has been in the forefront of youth development, working with young people from disadvantaged economic, social and family circumstances. The Boys & Girls Club of Central Appalachia has actively sought to enrich the lives of girls and boys whom other youth agencies have had difficulty reaching. We are dedicated to ensuring that our community’s disadvantaged children and teens have greater access to quality programs and services that will enhance their lives and shape their futures.
